As a staff of Alfaraby Medical Centre, I was obligated to render emergency medical services to our clinic assigned to Samsung Engineering E and A. our project site is Jafurah Eastern Region.
Main Duties on site are as follows.
This is a strict Saudi Aramco project with staff strength of more than 4,000 on site which is in the heart of the Jafurah Desert in a remote area which is about two hours’ drive from the nearest city of Dammam.
This is a restricted site for only company staffs.
As the only emergency doctor on site along side with four nurses. We cover swift medical services to all staffs 24/7. Our clinic is a category B clinic, and we have successfully handled and stabilized various emergency cases ranging from Cardiac, Urological, Psychiatric and mental health issues. Once we stabilize, transfer is immediately carried out to the nearest tertiary facility which is about two hours’ drive away. there are three ambulances attached to the clinic which facilitates swift response to emergency calls.
I possess demonstrable skills and competencies in critical care including patient assessment. I perform provision of non-invasive ventilation such as BIPAP and CPAP, fluid resuscitation, suctions. I have successfully managed several cases of heat stroke through rapid fluid resuscitation with optimum outcome.
I also perform Preliminary interpretation of bedside tests such as Portable Chest X-ray results, ECG, ABG analysis and electrolyte results and I know how to take reasonable actions to correct deranged electrolytes.
My skill set also includes performing Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support.
I perform prescribing and administration of medications for ionotropic support in patients with shock, hypotension, hypovolemia etc. and other patients requiring Hemodynamic Stabilization following severe hemodynamic instability [ hypotension, bradycardia etc.]. I am familiar with and still currently prescribe both positive ionotropic support medications such as Phenylephrine, Nor-Epinephrine, Vasopressin, Dopamine, Dobutamine and negative ionotropic support medications such as bisoprolol & metoprolol. I also perform insertion of central venous catheter for the administration of these medications.
In addition, I possess the ability to use and utilize medical devices and equipment for everyday tasks that contribute to patient care and well-being: nebulizers; syringe drivers; fluid drivers; mechanical ventilators; ECG machines; portable mechanical ventilators; ophthalmoscopes, otoscopes; microscopes; laryngoscopes; autoclave; chest tube drainage devices etc. Also, I am competent in using various computer software applications such as Microsoft ware, Excels and office applications.
I also coordinate and teach nurses in our facility.

This is a twenty-two-patient bed space clinic that operates twenty-four hours with three doctors and nine nurses. The clinic handle cases ranging from pediatrics, medicine, surgical and obstetrics and gynecological cases.
As a full time, medical practitioner here, I attended to all emergency cases during my shift. It is also my responsibility to oversee and review patients admitted to the ward while on duty.
My duties include the following: attending to all emergency cases, stabilize and admit to medical, surgical or the children’s ward for further care and management. After stabilizing the patient, I ensure detailed medical history is obtained from the patient which will help me in the further care, diagnosis and adjustment in the management that will be of optimum benefit to the patient.
In this facility, I also run antenatal clinic once weekly. Other doctors and I also take deliveries, and I also undertake Caesarean section of pregnant women when there is a classical indication for it.
I am competent in analyzing diagnostic images and laboratory test results and carry out a meticulous plan on the right treatment to give based on the diagnostic test results and clinical findings. I carry out timely referral of cases that requires specialists review at tertiary hospitals and follow up with the patient on the progress of their health and well-being.
Federal Medical Centre Yenagoa is the largest tertiary and teaching hospital in Bayelsa State of Nigeria. With about 200 bed spaces. It was a privilege for me to undertake a career in this vibrant and well-equipped facility. I worked full time as an emergency medical doctor, working about 40 hours a week in addition I take 48 hours weekend calls every three weeks.
The hospital has the following departments: Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Surgery, Internal medicine, Hematology, Psychiatry. In addition, it also runs a dialysis Centre. As an emergency doctor, I effectively carried out the following duties.
I attend to various emergency cases ranging from cardiac, Obstetrics and Gynecological and surgical emergencies. I make diagnosis of cases via history/examination and carry out basic investigations and
their interpretations (e.g. ECG, radiological, laboratory and bedside tests, CSF analysis, etc.) with prompt interventions. My duties also involve emergency procedures like protection and maintenance of airways and performance of minor surgical emergencies procedures (such as suturing of wounds, suprapubic cystostomy, debridement, incision and drainage of abscesses, amongst many others.
I am also involved in Teachings (formal/informal) of medical students, interns, junior colleagues, nurses and pharmacists on rotations in the department, and participation in ward rounds and clinical review meetings with my consultants and Senior Registrars. Furthermore, discharging of stable patients at the directions
of consultants and involvement in departmental audits and leadership are inclusive.
Some frequent cases tended to include suspected and confirmed cases of COVID-19, acute COPD and asthma exacerbations, hyperglycemic/hypoglycemic emergencies, cardiac arrest, hyperglycemic/hypoglycemic emergencies, cardiac arrest, tachyarrhythmia, CVAs, substance intoxications/abuse, etc. (medical); RTAs/traumas, different cases of acute abdomen, wound closure,
acute urinary retention, etc. (surgical); NAIs, anaphylaxis, febrile seizures and status epilepticus, bronchiolitis, pneumonia, dehydration, pediatric; acute PID, PPH, tensioned ovarian cysts, etc.
After stabilizing the patient, I refer them to the appropriate department for continued care and management. While the patient is in the emergency under my care, I also collaborate and work as a team with senior registrars/consultants from various departments and seek their professional opinions that will help and improve the patient care. I also ensure detailed and accurate notes of patients are kept for future references.
As a duty of my professional medical care, I ensure to discuss patients presenting symptoms, possible diagnosis and prognosis and the treatments that will be provided for them and their immediate family members if given the permission to do so by the patient.
I also identify various health conditions through targeted physical examinations. I also carry out minor surgical procedures, incision and drainage that will alleviate symptoms of emergency cases before transferring to the appropriate department for further care and management.

This is a compulsory one-year medical internship for all graduates of medical schools that graduated both in Nigeria and abroad. This is a continuation of our medical training but in the clinical setting to enable us to get exposed to the real medical practice. During this one-year training, we are made to spend three months each in the four core departments which include Internal medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics and surgery.
While rotating through the various core departments, I was actively involved in the treatment and care of payments under the strict supervision of my seniors. I was able to adapt situations and learned new skills quickly. As a medical intern, I carry out the following duties effectively.
1. Timely administering of IV medications and some oral medicals.
2. Running antennal clinicals under the strict supervision of my seniors.
3. Taking detailed medical histories from patients
4. Responded to medical emergencies to help stabilize and treat patients.
5. Completed daily rounds to check on patients and identify any reasons for concern.

7. Wrote detailed and professional progress notes for each patient, outlining notable events and examinations findings.
Patient management
I have successfully managed various emergencies on remote area clinics ranging from cardiac emergencies, diabetic emergencies, neurological emergencies.
I also conducted training for Basic Life Support and First Aids to over 200 medical and non medical staffs in site.
As the head of the medical team in the remote area that renders emergency and non emergency medical services to over three thousand staffs, i am responsible in developing streamlined workable plans that will positively impact on the medical needs of the people.
