Teaching and Learning

● Plan and prepare well-structured, clearly presented lessons appropriate to the abilities of all students and the syllabus being taught.

● Make sure that the classroom is a stimulating environment that facilitates learning

● Generate enthusiasm for the subject being taught and inspire all students to work to their potential

● Liaise with the Head of Department and Learning Support, where a student may have special educational needs and with the Form Tutor and Head of House if a student is experiencing pastoral difficulties

● Promote high standards of behavior by encouraging a positive, proactive approach to study and build productive relationships with students

● Set homework according to policy and pertinent to the student’s ability and wider work load

● Assess student’s work accurately and regularly, giving thoughtful and meaningful feedback

● Promote high standards of organization

● Promote high standards in the use of English as the common language and help develop English for Academic Progress

● Improve, update and maintain materials and resources as needed

● Complete written assessments and reports according to guidelines and deadlines

● Identify and adopt the most effective active, creative teaching approaches for all students in line with current best practice and the ethos of our school.

● Work with other members of the Faculty to apply consistent standards in the following: curriculum planning and delivery; formative and summative assessment through classwork, homework, and formal examination; standardization and moderation.

● Create a stimulating learning environment, including displays of student work.

● Take learning outside the classroom; identify opportunities and take advantage of resources to contextualize learning locally, regionally, and/or globally.

● Adopt strategies and monitor teaching and learning activities to support individuals with Learning Support or EAL needs.

● Set, communicate, and assess homework/formative work regularly in line with school and department policy.

● Identify and teach study skills/strategies that will develop students' ability to work independently.

● Effectively teach classes, as allocated, to a mixed-ability class (or classes), drawn from a wide range of cultural and educational backgrounds, including students for whom English may not be their first language.

● Monitor, assess and report on learners’ work and progress, in accordance with School policy and procedures on assessment and reporting.

● Contribute to the development of curriculum (the production and ongoing review of units and/or schemes of work), ensuring both diversity and inclusivity are incorporated to student learning experiences.

● Actively contribute to Science Team to enhance student learning opportunities for all students.

• To lead and manage pupil learning through effective teaching, in accordance within the Biology Department’s schemes of work and policies.
• To ensure continuity, progression and cohesiveness in all teaching
• To use a variety of methods and approaches (including differentiation) to match curricular objectives to the range of pupil needs, and ensure equal opportunity for all pupils.
• To set homework regularly, (in accordance with the school homework policy), to consolidate and extend learning, and to encourage pupils to take responsibility for their own learning.
• To set high expectations for all pupils, to deepen their knowledge and understanding, and to maximise their achievement.
• To use positive management of behavior in an environment of mutual respect, which allows pupils to feel safe and secure, and promotes their self‐esteem.

• Along with HS Biology teaching, Fulfilled responsibility of observing lessons on a regular basis to evaluate the quality of teaching and to identify and promote good practice.
• To identify and promote opportunities for students to develop their ICT skills and to become increasingly independent learners.
• To liaise with pastoral heads, tutors and parents about student performance and matters of discipline.
• To work closely with the Science subject leaders, to ensure the smooth running of the Science department.
• To take an active part in arrangements for recruiting, inducting and supporting new staff and in covering for absent staff.
• To hold termly Science department meetings, ensuring that minutes are kept.
• To encourage the use of ICT, by teachers, technicians and students, and to keep abreast of new technology that may enhance teaching and learning.
• To oversee health and safety in the Science department and to update the Science department health and safety policy.
• To coordinate events and activities for Science Week each year that enhance the standing of Science in the school.
