1. Patient Assessment and Stabilization
• Perform rapid assessment of acutely ill or injured children.
• Prioritize care using triage principles.
• Stabilize critical conditions (e.g., respiratory distress, seizures, trauma, shock).
2. Diagnosis and Management
• Obtain detailed history and perform physical examinations.
• Order and interpret diagnostic tests (labs, imaging, ECGs).
• Formulate differential diagnoses and initiate treatment plans.
• Manage a wide range of conditions, from minor injuries to life-threatening illnesses.
3. Procedural Skills
• Perform emergency procedures such as:
• IV insertion
• Lumbar puncture
• Intubation and airway management
• Chest tube placement
• Laceration repair and wound care
• Splinting and fracture management
4. Family Communication and Education
• Communicate with caregivers about diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis.
• Provide emotional support and education tailored to the child’s condition.
• Involve families in care decisions and discharge planning.
5. Team Collaboration
• Work closely with pediatricians, ER staff, nurses, respiratory therapists, and other specialists.
• Participate in trauma/code teams and resuscitation efforts.
• Coordinate with inpatient units or transfer teams when needed.
6. Documentation and Compliance
• Accurately document all findings, procedures, and plans in the medical record.
• Follow hospital protocols, safety guidelines, and legal requirements in pediatric care.
7. Continuous Learning and Training
• Stay current with pediatric emergency guidelines (e.g., PALS, ATLS).
• Participate in simulations, quality improvement, and continuing education.
