Duties and Responsibilities

• Work as main points of support for OBGYNs, monitoring of patient vitals, administering medication, and establishing a trusted line of communication with expectant mothers.
• Responsible for monitoring both mother and baby, taking vitals, assist during ultrasounds and antepartum fetal assessments, and providing support to expectant mothers unique to their individual health needs.
• Step up as active members of the birthing team, supporting the mother throughout her birthing process, and assisting the doctors in the safe delivery of the baby.
• Being prepared to assist in any kind of delivery, (vaginal, breech, or cesarean) troubleshoot complications, address emergency situations, and have everything set for care.
• L&D Nurses are relied upon to communicate the mental and physical changes that coincide with childbirth, validating the trauma that both body and mind have just been put through, and supplying or sourcing necessary support, such as lactation consultants or mental health providers.

• Assists with routine examinations, including pap smears and sample collection.
• Collects and records patients’ health data, such as vital signs and blood pressure.
• Consults and educates patients regarding birth control and safe practices.
• Informs and educates patients about fertility treatment options.
• Assists with prevention and screening measures, like mammograms.
• Administers vaccines, such as the HPV vaccine for cervical cancer.
• Assists with obstetrical exams, like pelvic exams and prenatal screenings.
• Educates and counsels pregnant women on prenatal care.
• Works with physicians during the labor and delivery process.
• Provides support, care, and guidance to new mothers.
• Monitors, weighs, and vaccinates newborns.
• Coordinates treatment with other nurse practitioners.

Duties and Responsibilities

Operating Room, Scrub Nurse

• Assisting the patient during all stages of surgery. The scrub nurse provides patient care before, during and after a surgical operation. They also help patients and their attendants understand the procedure, and answer questions related to the treatment.
• Checking all equipment before the surgery. Prior to the scheduled surgery, scrub nurses prepare the operation room by ensuring the availability of all medical equipment and supplies. They also sterilise and count different tools, gowns, scrubs and other instruments for record keeping.
• Helping surgeons and assistant surgeons prepare for the surgery. Scrub nurses help other members of the team, such as the surgeon and assistant surgeon, prepare for surgery by assisting them in putting on sterile gowns and gloves. They also help drape the patient using towels and sheets, as per the routine.
• Assembling emergency and surgical materials for easier access. Just before the surgery commences, scrub nurses gather tools such as blades, needles, suction tubes, cautery cords and mayo stands near the table. They place this equipment in the right position to ensure easy access during the procedure.
• Supporting the surgeons during the surgery. Scrub nurses ensure hygiene during surgical operations by following medical protocols for operating rooms. They help surgeons perform the procedure by passing the required tools to the surgeon, responding to hand signals and medical terminology for specific instruments, and maintaining sterility.
• Performing post-surgery checks. After the surgery is complete, scrub nurses check the number of instruments remaining, remove remaining tools, help patients dress and transfer the patient to their room. They monitor the patient's condition and follow post-surgery instructions given by the surgeon.
• Documenting patient information. Scrub nurses are responsible for documenting the supplies used during the procedure. They also update the medical chart and inform patients, and their attendants about post-surgery care.

Circulating Nurse

• Acting as an advocate for the patient before, during and after surgery.
• Monitoring and recording the patient's vitals pre-operation.
• Preparing the surgical tools and materials that the surgical team will need during the operation.
• Recording every aspect of an operation, including the names and titles of those performing the surgery, the tools used, the amount of anesthetic a patient received and how long the surgery took.
• Advising the surgical team on potential harm to the patient during surgery.
• Assisting surgeons during the surgery if needed.
• Escorting patients to the recovery room post-operation.
• Cleaning the operating room post-operation.
• Accounting for all tools used during the procedure.

Pediatric Ward Nurse

• Check in child patients, evaluating their symptoms and checking their vital signs.
• Complete diagnostic tests.
• Administer medications or minor procedures.
• Create a treatment plan or coordinate follow-up medical care.
• Educate family members on treatment options.
