As General Surgery Registrar, I am responsible for providing surgical care to patients under the supervision of a consultant surgeon. My duties include providing evaluation, diagnostic studies, and therapeutic plan of surgical patients. I am also responsible of admitting patients from the emergency department, managing surgical emergencies including performing emergency procedures independently or under supervision. I am also responsible for preparing patients for elective operations and attending operative lists which includes assisting and performing elective operations under supervision.
This period was part of a 5-year-training program ,MD General Surgery, that included clinical rotations in various surgical specialties. As Registrar of GI and Hepatobiliary Surgery at Khartoum Teaching Hospital, I operated and assisted in a variety of GI surgeries. I communicated with patients and other medical professionals to create treatment plans that included preoperative preparations, surgical protocols, and postoperative care. I also conducted daily rounds in general wards and ICU monitoring patients progress, providing postoperative management and managing complications. During this period I gained experience in dealing with cases such as upper GI hemorrhage, gastric and colorectal carcinoma, biliary lithiasis, pancreatic and biliary carcinoma. I was also exposed to various procedures such as upper/lower GI endoscopy and ERCP. Additionally, I participated in the weekly academic meeting, which included case presentations, tutorials, etc. I was also involved in academic research and submitted a thesis as part of my clinical doctorate requirements.
This period was part of my training for the clinical MD in general surgery. As General Surgery Registrar, I was responsible for providing surgical care to patients under the supervision of a consultant surgeon. I was mainly responsible of admitting patients from the emergency department, managing surgical emergencies including performing emergency procedures independently or under supervision. I was also seeing patients in a daily ward and ICU rounds and weekly at outpatient surgical clinics, providing diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up. My responsibilities also included preparing patients for elective operations and attending operative lists in which I assisted and performed elective operations under supervision. In addition, I participated in the weekly academic meeting, which included case presentations, tutorials, etc.
As a General Surgery Resident, in this private hospital, I responded to emergency consults. This included evaluating trauma patients and patients with surgical emergencies and consulting with senior surgeons. I also prepared patients for surgery by reviewing their medical records, performing physical exams, and ordering diagnostic tests. I assisted in a wide variety of emergency and elective operations. After surgery, I provided postoperative care by conducting daily ward and ICU rounds, monitoring patients, providing pain management, and managing complications.
In this period I started my training as a Registrar of General Surgery in the Sudan Medical Specialization Board MD Program. The first two years of this program is the core surgical training period in which I rotated through minor and major rotations in the departments of General Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, Urology, Plastic Surgery, and Orthopaedics. My responsibilities included full coverage of surgical and trauma team duties, providing full assessment and management to emergency surgical patients, including performing minor and major emergency operations under supervision. I also participated in different surgical referred clinics and provided in-patient care and post-discharge follow-up of surgical patients. I prepared surgical patients for elective operations and assisted in and performed major and minor elective operations under supervision. I attended major and teaching rounds and provided teaching rounds and sessions to junior doctors and medical students. Additionally, I participated in academic activities run by the Sudan Medical Specialization Board, which included monthly meetings, workshops, lectures, and conferences.
As a Surgical Resident Medical Officer in the Department of Surgery, General and Hepatobiliary Unit, I was responsible for covering the surgical and trauma ER. I attended general surgery and hepatobiliary referred clinics and assisted in major operations on the general and hepatobiliary elective operations list. Under supervision, I also performed minor operations. Additionally, I provided in-patient care and post-discharge follow-up.
As a full-time Medical Officer in the Accident and Emergency department, I was responsible for providing initial assessment and management to emergency patients. I worked as part of a team to provide care to severely ill medical and surgical patients and assessed and managed poly-traumatized patients. I also performed emergency invasive procedures tailored to the patient’s condition. Additionally, I conducted teaching sessions for Alribat University medical students.
